The head-on crash reportedly occurred around 3:30 p.m. in the area of Atlas Fireworks.

One person was killed and another critically injured in a head-on crash on Route 101A in Amherst on Friday afternoon.

The crash reportedly occurred on Route 101A in front of Atlas Fireworks. According to Amherst Fire Chief Mark Boynton, there was one fatality and a second person is in critical condition.

Boynton said the Amherst Fire Department was dispatched at 3:29 p.m. to reports of a head-on collision with injuries and one vehicle smoking. Prior to arrival, calls were received indicating that one subject was unconscious and possibly not breathing.

Upon arrival, Boynton said bystanders and an off-duty Lowell firefighter had removed the male driver from the vehicle and started CPR. The driver was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle was in critical condition with traumatic injuries to her legs and was transported to a local hospital, he said.

Amherst Police Chief Mark Reams told The Telegraph that the cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time.

Route 101A westbound was temporarily closed due to the crash, with traffic detoured onto Boston Post Road.
