Will Souhegan Grad Survive Another Week on Idol?

The fate of Mont Vernon's Alex Preston is in America's hands.

Souhegan High graduate Alex Preston made it to American Idol's Top 12. But will he survive another week?

The 20-year-old Mont Vernon resident performed again on Wednesday night's show and now it's once again up to the viewers to decide if he moves on. The public voting results will be revealed on Thursday night's show.

Wednesday night's theme was "Home," and before Preston performed he spoke a bit about his hometown of Mont Vernon.

"It's a small town, but I love it," he said. "There's no stop lights, there's one store... it was the best place to grow up."

He also got to see a recorded video message from his grandmother, Theresa Philbrick. "I know you're gonna be the best," she told him. "And you will be the winner."

With his brother Matt and sister Sam in the audience, Preston sang "I Don't Want to Be" by Gavin DeGraw. Unfortunately, the judges weren't all that impressed by his performance.

"It wasn't your best vocal performance for me," said Jennifer Lopez. "Mostly due to the arrangement."

"I'm so used to hearing you in an intimate, introspective context," said Harry Connick Jr. "It's nice to see you step out of what I thought was your comfort zone. It just sounded like you were a little bit overpowered."

"How it hit me was the word instability kept coming to me," added Keith Urban. "It was almost like you weren't quite sure how to be within the arrangement. The song was kind of around you instead of you kind of centering and being in the song."

American Idol's results show airs on Thursday, March 6 at 8 p.m. on Fox.
