House Kills Casino Bill

The governor wanted it, the NH Senate overwhelmingly passed it, but the House? No dice.

CONCORD, NH – Gov. Maggie Hassan fought for a casino and the Senate overwhelmingly passed casino gambling, but the House of Representatives refused to play along, voting Wednesday to kill the bill. The bill was rejected by a 199 to 164 vote and followed some tradition: The 400-member House has never passed expanded gambling.  Here's a link to the roll call vote. Patricia Lovejoy (D-Stratham) opened the long floor fight. Spratt said the proposed casino would mean revenue for the state, and offset New Hampshire dollars flowing to out-of-state casinos. Lovejoy maintains that a …

Turning Tragedy Into Motivation To Make a Difference

Motivating Miles guides families on positive journeys as they face life-threatening illnesses.

It is the news nobody wants to hear. The realization that one you hold so dear is facing the end of their days. Life-threatening illnesses have a huge impact on those afflicted and the loved ones around them. Caleb Ginsberg of Amherst experienced this for himself five years ago when, not just one, but three of those closest to him were diagnosed with advanced stages of cancer in the same week. His grandmother. His aunt. A good friend who he considered family. All of them facing the reality that their lives will be cut short. The overwhelming feelings of sadness and fear could have broken Ginsberg and his family, but something much different happened. A realization that these final moments were not to be a downward fall into despair, but a…

Cleanup Organizer Sees a Future of Smaller Footprints

Former high school teacher Pat Conaway sees real hope in the young people who help him clean the area's trails, waterways and roadways.

Pat Conaway admits he is "kind of a nut" about the environment, so when he retired from teaching in 2008, it didn't take long for him to find a number of productive ways to spend his time.  "I wanted to get people fired up about the environment, to try to encourage citizens to get involved locally," said Conaway, of Natick, Mass., founder of Big Hearts, Little Feet.  A nearly constant presence on area roadways, trails and waterways, Conaway can be found leading groups of volunteers, including many students, to pick up trash, improve trails and remove invasive species. From beer cans to soda and coffee cups, trash tossed by the roadside washes into local rivers and, if left alone, eventually finds its way to the ocean, where scientists have…

Politicos Fete NH Primary

At 100, the New Hampshire Primary is as strong as ever, advocates say.

Political activists, historians, and public officials, as well as the media, came together to celebrate the 100th birthday of the New Hampshire primary, which was signed into law on May 21, 1913.   The Bullock Act, as it was known at the time, changed the way the party delegates were chosen, from behind closed doors meetings, mainly controlled by the Boston & Maine Railroad, to direct election of delegates via presidential preference balloting. The family of Rep. Stephen Bullock, D-Richmond, was on hand to accept thanks from the state. The family had donated a number of items to the state from the family’s archives. The attendees shared political war stories, cracked jokes, thanked Secretary of State Bill Gardner for his tenacious defense …
