Souhegan Girls Take Aim at State Championship Today

Third-ranked Souhegan High School girls varsity soccer team will take on ninth-ranked Pembroke Academy in the state championship playoff today after defeating seventh-ranked Hanover High School 3-2 on Wednesday.

The Sabers (15-3-1) defeated the Marauders (10-4-5) 3-2 in a shoot out at Exeter High School's Bill Ball Stadium on Nov. 6. Souhegan took a 2-0 lead on the foot of Peyton Kent. 

A second half Hanover rally tied the game at 2-2, After two scoreless 10-minute over times, the game turned into penalty shot goals.  In the first set of five shots for each team, the score was tied 2 to 2.  Souhegan scored two shoot out penalty shots off Alana Barretto and Peyton Kent - Souhegan's first two shots. 

Throughout the shoot out, Souhegan Goalie Mikaela Sullivan was exceptional. Sullivan stopped three of the five Hanover shots in the first session. In the second session, Mikaela Sullivan stopped the first shot. Rachel Facey scored on the first shot and with that goal the Sabers earned their spot in the Division II finals to be played at 4 p.m. on the campus of Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester against the ninth ranked Pembroke Spartans.
