Comcast Awards $41K in Scholarships

The Comcast Foundation, founded in 1999 to provide charitable support to its local communities and to empower and enrich lives, today announced the 2014 recipients of its annual Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program. The program, one of the Comcast Foundation's signature community investment programs, recognizes students' leadership skills, academic achievement and commitment to community service.

New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan, who assisted Steve Hackley, Senior Vice President of Comcast's Greater Boston Region, in awarding the scholarships at the Statehouse on May 27, praised good corporate citizens like Comcast.

Thirty-one of the 2014 New Hampshire Leaders and Achievers recipients received $1,000 scholarships and one lucky student was awarded a $10,000 Comcast Founders Scholarship – instituted in honor of Ralph J. Roberts, Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Comcast Corporation – for a total of $41,000 awarded in New Hampshire this year.

"The Comcast Foundation's Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program has a strong history of making higher education more accessible and more affordable for our young people, an effort that is critical to helping our students develop the skills and innovative thinking needed for success in the 21st century economy," Hassan said. "On behalf of the people New Hampshire, I want to thank the Comcast Foundation for investing in our young people and congratulate the 32 Granite State high school seniors awarded with this year's Leaders and Achievers Scholarship. Because of their talent and commitment to their communities, New Hampshire is poised for a bright future, and we look forward to all that they will accomplish."

"These students have not only posted strong academic results, but they have also demonstrated leadership in school activities and shared a strong commitment to community service," said Hackley. "We are proud to recognize the success and potential of such outstanding student leaders, all of whom are preparing for the next step in their educational careers."

The Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program provides one-time $1,000 scholarships to students who strive to achieve their potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students. The philosophy behind the program is to give young people every opportunity to prepare for the future and to engage them in their communities. The program also demonstrates the importance of civic involvement, and the value placed on civic involvement by the business community.

Local winners throughout New Hampshire have participated in a wide variety of community service activities, such as volunteering at The American Red Cross, Big Brothers and Big Sisters and the Girl Scouts.

Since the program's inception, more than $21.6 million in scholarship money has been presented to more than 21,000 scholarship winners nationwide.  A list of the scholarship recipients in New Hampshire is detailed below.
