Alex Preston Vies for Idol Top 3

The star, if he makes the top 3, will have a homecoming party Saturday in NH.

American Idol "make up" and "break up" song night was "make it" or "break it" time for the final four performers. New Hampshire's own Alex Preston finished strong with a performance of "Yellow" by Coldplay.

The results will be announced on the FOX show May 8, but American Idol is planning for a tentative homecoming celebration Saturday at the University of New Hampshire. The festivities, pending the votes Thursday night, include a free concert at UNH, Preston visiting his hometown of Mont Vernon, and a stop by the Statehouse.

The American Idol judges gave each of the four finalists high marks.

The judges enjoyed but were not overly wowed with Preston's performance of "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz. (Jennifer Lopez said, "It stayed kind of linear for me.")

However, Preston's final performance – "Yellow" – was a crowd- and judge- pleaser.

"You really needed that," Harry Connick Jr. said. "There's been some great performances tonight. That was one of them."

Keith Urban was similarly impressed, saying the song perfectly suited Preston and his talents.

Lopez wrapped up the judges' comments by saying to Preston, "You're integral to this competition."
