New Hampshire Roller Derby Season Opener Double Header

MANCHESTER – New Hampshire Roller Derby is ready to kick off its 2014 home season in style, with a double header game on April 12 that promises to be more exciting than last year.

First up at Manchester’s JFK Memorial Coliseum, two of NHRD’s home teams – the Granite Skate Troopers and Nightmares on Elm Street – will square off in the first bout of the season. In 2013, the Nightmares took home the Kennedy Cup for the third year in a row, making them the longest running league champions.

The last time these two teams met on the flat track, the Nightmares topped the Troopers 341-51. Will the Troopers be able to unseat the champions? There’s lots of new faces this year so join in on the roller derby action on Saturday, April 12, to find out. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. with the first whistle at 5 p.m. The JFK Coliseum is located at 303 Beech St., Manchester.

The second bout of the 2014 season should be just as heart-pounding as the home team game. NHRD’s B travel team, the Queen City Cherry Bombs, will take on Maine Roller Derby’s Calamity Janes. The two leagues have a long history of being frenemies, and the Bombs have yet been able to take home a win from the Janes.

The two teams battled each other last August during the All Eight On the Floor Tournament in Worcester, Mass. During this game, the Bombs were so close to tasting victory until the Janes were able to snatch it away during the last jam of the game, coming out on top 140-115. Will the Bombs be able to secure their first win of the season? Come to the JFK and cheer them on.

As part of NHRD’s commitment to giving back to the communities its members live in, the league has teamed up with the Children’s Hospital at Darmouth-Hitchcock, making ChaD the featured charity for the season opener. Wear a red shirt to the game and a $1 of ticket admission will be donated to this worthy organization.

Back by popular demand is the wheel toss for the young and old alike during half time, as is the beer garden for those 21 and older with proper ID. New this year is pop culture and roller derby trivia, which will be run by announcer Helen Carnate. A prize will be awarded to the winner. Also new this year is the half time show. Freak Factory New England, of Manchester, will give a demonstration of their group fitness training for all levels with some of their clients from New Hampshire Roller Derby showcasing strength, agility and teamwork.

Presale tickets are $10 and are $12 at the door. Kids 10 and younger are free. To purchase tickets to the season home opener or a season ticket, visit http://www.brownpapertickets.com/producer/8915.

To help pay for travel expenses and run the league, NHRD has partnered with You're Fired, at 4 Coliseum Ave., Nashua, for a fundraiser.

Anyone who mentions New Hampshire Roller Derby from April 18-20 will have their firing feed donated to the league.
