NH House Finance Committee Chooses Politics Over Children

I think that your readers should be aware that on Tuesday, the House Finance Committee voted along party lines to derail a bill that would have removed the moratorium on public charter schools and helped to prevent the loss of approximately $5.6 million in federal funding.

The main proponent behind retaining the bill was Representative Dan Eaton who coincidentally was recorded on video tape last week discussing HB299. In the video, Representative Eaton thought HB299 would make a great political trump card for future negotiations. You can view the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7D_AJ2JpqA

It seems like a political move that essentially threw New Hampshire's children under the bus and threatens to play Russian roulette with millions in federal funding. I understand that the legislature can be a very challenging place however I think that what happened was wrong.

I believe I heard the word "unfunded" in there, and the Finance Committee has a responsibility to the state to balance the budget. I would say that if they are still trying to find a way to make this happen, you should be celebrating...

I do not appreciate when someone is trying to use HB299 as a game plan or "pawn" as he said, for future negotiations. It has been years since federal money has been awarded to NH for the expansion and building of charter schools in this State and now they have it and of course someone has to mess with it. Unless I missed something, I am not impressed and do not trust the decisions of Finance Committee when it comes to the educational needs of the children of this State.

They only want to defund things that they don't want. Try and defund something they do want and then they just raise taxes. Most of the lot are a bunch of weasels.
