When Hurricane Sandy hit and school was canceled, four industrious young ladies got busy and went to work. Knowing that the Woman’s Association of the Congregational Church of Amherst is holding their annual Holiday Fair on November 17, they decided that they wanted to donate their time and their talent and create something that they could sell at the fair.
Lauren, Holly and Charlotte Rohlfs and Maggie Cissel bought Polartec fleece in patterns that would appeal to buyers their age. Then they produced stadium throws in several patterns, including Souhegan football, the Boston Celtics, and penguins.
The four friends have been helping out at the Fair for several years. They have worked at the Bake Sale table, packaging homemade goodies in attractive containers and selling them. They also plan ahead, save their money, and buy their Christmas gifts for their families at the Fair. It has become a holiday tradition for them and their families.
The Fair has been an Amherst tradition for over 50 years. Each year, the Woman’s Association adds something new to their traditional offerings. In addition to the new Polartec throws, there will be handmade chocolates in many sizes, flavors and shapes. Back by popular demand are custom-designed pewter ornaments of the church and individually decorated fresh Maine balsam wreaths. Traditional favorites include Cabot cheese and premium pecans. Treasures table includes antique glass, vintage jewelry and old and new collectibles. Handmade one-of-a-kind American Girl doll clothes, knits and crocheted gifts are always popular.
Themed gift baskets and more will be at the raffle table. The Silent Auction includes an antique button bracelet and other special items.
When tired of shopping, one can enjoy the luncheon of homemade soup, bread, cookies and a drink.
Come and find many unique and handcrafted gifts, including the Polartec throws, and enjoy the beginning of the holiday season. The Fair is open from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm on November 17. The Church is located at 11 Church Street, Amherst, on the village green. Come and enjoy local, stress-free shopping and go home ready to greet the holidays!
