Flu Hits NH

Make sure to get vaccinated and practice good hygiene to avoid getting sick.

Prepare for those tissues and cough medicine.

The Department of Health and Human Services has identified 3 cases of seasonal influenza in New Hampshire residents which are the first positive results the lab has confirmed for the 2011-12 season.

These cases were confirmed in one adult and two children. DHHS says these cases are a reminder that the flu season is really just beginning and we do expect to see many more cases between now and the spring.

People are encouraged to ask their health care provider for the flu vaccine. There is also a nasal version of the vaccine for most people ages 2-49 who prefer not to receive the shot. Influenza is highly contagious. It spreads from person to person through the air by coughing or sneezing. It can also be spread by direct contact with an infected person. Flu symptoms usually begin one to four days after being exposed to the virus.

Practicing good hygiene is also a critical  step in guarding against influenza and other illnesses this winter. Washing your hands often, getting  plenty  of rest, coughing into your sleeve, and staying home when you are sick are all simple common sense steps to help stay healthy.

The  Centers  for  Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone age 6 months and older be vaccinated annually against seasonal influenza. Those  especially  at risk for complications include seniors, those with compromised immune systems, people with lung illnesses (such as asthma or COPD), and patients with heart conditions.

For more information about the flu or flu  vaccine  contact the NH Immunization  Program at 271-4482 or the Bureau of Infectious Disease Control and Surveillance Section at 271-4496. You can also visit the CDC website, www.cdc.gov/flu  and www.dhhs.nh.gov for regular updates of the latest flu conditions in New Hampshire and nationally.
