Biden's Debate Performance Energizes NH Dems
Patch polled influential New Hampshire Republicans and Democrats to find out who they felt won the debate.
Joe Biden's performance in Thursday night's debate appears to have energized New Hampshire Democrats, according to a flash poll conducted overnight.
"Every answer by Biden was close to a standout," said one Democrat. "He had a pulse, he had a spine, he had a number, he had a story to support the number and he had gravitas."
Patch tapped our panels of influential New Hampshire Republicans and Democrats in two polls conducted immediately after the vice presidential debate between Biden and Paul Ryan ended.
Patch received responses from 22 Republicans and 16 Democrats. The poll is not scientific.
Every one of the Democratic respondents said they felt Biden won the debate. Seventy-five percent said they felt Biden won by a wide margin, while 25 percent said they felt he won by a slim margin.
Of the GOP respondents, 36 percent said Ryan won "by a wide margin," and another 36 percent said he won by "a slim margin." Twenty-three percent were neutral or had no opinion, while 5 percent felt Biden won by "a slim margin."
"Ryan was not as strong as expected," said one Republican influential.
Republican respondents said they felt the national media would say that Biden was the consensus winner, with 60 percent agreeing with that statement by a wide or slim margin. By comparison, only 23 percent felt Ryan would be declared as the winner by the national media. Democrats also said the national media would declare Biden the winner, with 81 percent agreeing by a wide or slim margin.
Most Democratic respondents felt Biden did a lot to improve the Obama/Biden ticket's chances of winning the Granite State, with 81 percent saying they strongly or somewhat agreed that Biden's performance made it more likely the Democrats will win on Nov. 6.
Meanwhile, only 55 percent of Republican respondents agreed that Ryan's debate performance makes it more likely that the Romney/Ryan ticket will win New Hampshire.
Asked what moment will stand out most in the minds of conservative and swing voters in New Hampshire, most Republicans cited Biden's debate demeanor.
They mentioned Biden's laughing, his smirks, and his "constant interruptions" whenever Ryan was answering questions.
"Joe Biden was disgraceful in his debate performance," said one Republican. "It wasn't a Sunday talk show, it was a Vice Presidential Debate. He had a complete lack of respect for his opponent and it made him look very angry."
"Biden's interruptions and laughter were very unpresidential in many regards," added another.
But Democrats praised Biden for the very same actions derided by Republicans, saying he remained aggressive and responded to Ryan's assertions.
"If Biden was highly animated, then Ryan was wooden and over rehearsed, providing clearly memorized answers," said one Democrat.
"Ryan was supposed to be wonky, intelligent, confident, and a great debater," said another. "We didn't see that tonight. He looked inexperienced, sometimes flustered, and unable to push back at Biden."
The Red and Blue Granite surveys
Our surveys are not a scientific random sample of any larger population but rather an effort to listen to a swath of influential local Republican and Democratic activists, party leaders and elected officials in New Hampshire. All of these individuals have agreed to participate in the surveys, although not all responded to this week's questions. Surveys were conducted between Oct. 11 and Oct. 12, 2012.
Patch will be conducting Red Granite and Blue Granite surveys throughout 2012 in hopes of determining the true sentiment of Republicans and Democrats on the ground in New Hampshire. If you are an activist, party leader or elected official and would like to take part in a weekly surveys that lasts just a few minutes, please email Regional Editor Marc Fortier at marc.fortier@patch.com.

From hope and change to faux anger and genuine disrespect. At least that is what Biden projected last night.

Here's the difference - after seeing how Romney used an aggressive nature to push a whole bunch of malarkey last week - Biden decided to meet Republican lies aggressively and not allow them to stand unchallenged.
Last week the right loved the strong performance - but this week you call it disrespect. Its like when the bully meets the kid who won't back down and goes home to tell his mother....

Romney didn't interrupt, laugh when his opponent was talking about the plight of the middle class, talk under his breath, gesture almost uncontrollably while the President was responding to a question.

Jan this was a debate between Biden and Ryan. He was given equal time to refute anything said by Ryan. The same was true during the Romney/Obama debate. If Obama was not able to refute Romney's "lies" what makes you believe that they were lies?

Paul Ryan, knowing Joe Biden's wife and daughter were killed in a car accident, tells a story about someone being killed in a car accident?
Biden is clearly ready to be President if need be, Ryan's unfit to be in congress.

Hi Salemvoter,
Romney didn´t interrupt or laugh. He just lied through his teeth as he´s done for quite a while. Pro-choice as Mass. governor, then virulently anti-choice for the tea party activists, and now who knows where on reproductive freedom. Cut taxes and increase revenue? I´ll close loopholes but won`t tell you which. Malarky. Create millions of jobs but not say how he would do it. Bogus. Gonna bring fuel prices down... yeah right, now with China and other countries keeping world energy demand and prices high. Etch a sketch man... paint a new picture every time they find my previous one is fouled up.
I´d rather have a sincere president who cares about working people and is somewhat gruff and discourteous than a smoothie aristocrat who has little or no idea what it´s like to depend on a paycheck... Move in to your parents´ basement and ask them for a loan if ya wanna go to college. Mitt, get real... if you can. I´ll take the discourteous one over the liar. BTW, did you express outrage when Right Wing hero VP Cheney told someone to F.... off on the floor of the Senate. Maybe this plea for civility of the right wing is a little late and misplaced... Torture approved by Dubya and Cheney seems a bit more uncivil than interrupting in a debate.
Nuf said.

Even though they never left their chairs, Vice President Biden kicked Lyin' Ryan's arse (that's the Irish word!) all around the stage last night. He turned Lyin' Ryan into Cryin' Ryan! Mr. Bean may never recover!
Unlike President Obama, Joe Biden was *NOT* willing to stand there and be Gish Galloped by an endless pack of lies and deliberate distortions. And he's been around the block enough times with Republicans to both know the facts and know their despicable tactics.
He came ready to give as good as he got.
And yes, he broke the cardinal rule for Democrats: He *FOUGHT BACK*!

Also the Vice President clearly lied or proved his incompetence by stating that diplomats in Libya asked for more security.
"“We weren’t told they wanted more security there. We did not know they wanted more security.”
— Biden, speaking of the U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya
Biden’s bold statement was directly contradicted by State Department officials just this week, in testimony before a congressional panel and in unclassified cables released by a congressional committee
The Vice President also claimed he didn't vote to authorize military action in Iraq.

Probably because every word out of Lyin' Ryan's mouth was a lie (and that includes "and" and "umm"). Unlike in the previous Presidential Debate, Vice President Biden decided not to let the lies go unchallenged. It's a shame more people don't challenge the constant spew of Republican lies.

Dave Murry, still working through the math on that $5 trillion tax cut to the rich?
Joe Biden may be loud, but his record speaks for itself. He is for the middle class and Ryan is for the rich.
Remember when Ryan was criticizing the stimulus and then asked for stimulus money for his own state? That was a great point in the debate!
Judith Hogan

FTP - Who is picking up the tab for the stimilus bill? The taxpayer. Sooooo - do you think the taxpayers in Ryan's district should be asked to pay for the stimilus bill but never be given a chance to receive that for which they pay? Absurdity at its best!
Shame on Ryan if he failed to seek some stimilus funding for his district when he knew full well that most of it would go to Obama donors and never reach the average citizen who is paying the bill.

libs are always bent out of shape over tax cuts, who gets a cut, who shouldn't get one, and who should get stimulus money. I never hear them looking at government and saying... "ya know, maybe $16Trillion in debt is a little much, maybe government should cut back." Government is the biggest hog by far, and they're at the trough of the people's money! And they act like it's THEIR money. So we have this situation where DC steals $ from the people and congressmen/women (whether they're for it or not) figure they better at least try to grab some of it back for their district. It's all asinine, but it's the game that's played every day.

Yeah, Dave Murry, I heard your concern about the deficit loud and clear during the Bush administration... oh brother. Let me tell you something. As a registered Independent, I am also concerned about the deficit. I'm also concerned about fraud, racism, voter suppression, education, foreign affairs, healthcare and welfare, etc. I'm concerned about the sick and the poor who should not be left on the wayside because corporate America won't kick in their share of tax to run a civilized country. There are an awful lot of people in the world and we DO need government to keep us civilized, to create regulation to keep people in line, otherwise we'd just be like any other third world country. This is why I'll be voting the Democratic party this election.

Biden’s Private Reality
Joe Biden’s career of intellectual dishonesty is one step short of the Aristotelian ideal: It has a beginning (his law-school plagiarism) and a middle (his later campaign-trail plagiarism), but his performance in the recent debate suggests that it is without end. From misrepresenting Paul Ryan’s legislative record to telling bald-faced lies about his own, the vice president offered a master class in the art of deception.

Economy, Debates Reveal Obama, Biden Haven't Got What It Takes
This election should be about the economy -- the recovery is too slow and Americans are hurting. The performances of President Obama and Vice President Biden in the debates on the campaign trail tell us why. Both say endlessly that they inherited a huge mess, but Americans have seen challenges like these before -- and with better leaders, they licked those more quickly.

Bombastic blather will fool no one
Told ya so. President Obama should have pulled a Joe Girardi and benched Joe Biden long ago. Hillary Rodham Clinton would have knocked last night’s debate out of the park and probably won the election for the Democrats.
Instead, Biden took the stage and made a fool of himself. The experience that supposedly qualifies him to be a heartbeat away is more than offset by the manic behavior he exhibited.
Following his mood swings was like riding a roller coaster. He was over-amped in the beginning and somber and melancholy toward the end. Did the medication kick in, or was it wearing off?
