Amherst Names Citizen of the Year 2012

May Balsama was honored at the 4th of July ceremonies on Wednesday.

Another fine citizen was honored for their dedicated service to the surrounding community.

May Balsama was named the Amherst Citizen of the Year 2012 at yesterday's 4th of July ceremonies at the Village Common in Amherst.

She is currently the Executive Director of the Souhegan Valley Chamber of Commerce and president of the Souhegan Scholarship Foundation, and has been involved with countless groups and projects over the years.

"I am very honored to be chosen," said Balsama after receiving the award, "but I have to share this with all the people who worked on all of those committees you heard and all of the school board projects. They all contribute, as we all try to, to make Amherst a special place."

Balsama has played a part in community projects such as those seen at Souhegan High School and the Peabody Mill Environmental Center, as well as funding efforts for SHARE, veterans and the Bean Foundation. She said that her involvement in the local community is inspired by her family.

"They are the reason why I can do this," she said.

The award was presented by Lions Club president Kirk Rogers, who said that Balsama had numerous qualifications for the award, inculding loyalty, integrity and being the "hostess with the mostess" in caring for others.

Rogers said that her name is cited in 140 articles in New Hampshire newspapers alone, showing her commitment to the numerous causes and projects that have shaped the town into what it is today.

"She is a wonderful representative for Amherst," said Rogers.
